SICILY – Vidalia opened the season with a 46-0 win over the island of Sicily on the road. The Vikings were impressive in all phases of the game, head coach Mike Norris said.
“It was a big goal for us defensively. We wanted to start a white game. We wanted to go out there and compete,” he said. “We had freshmen who stepped up and competed well. We had young children who had more playing time than normal and showed us some good things.
Vidalia didn’t manage the ball well as they wanted. He said there were blocking assignments they could clean up, but the offense worked well in the air. Norris said they left a few scoring opportunities on the pitch.
Vidalia won the turnover battle as the defense forced three fumbles. The island of Sicily had to manage different formations and systems to build a full squad, he said. There was a clock running and the game was called off in the fourth quarter with about 10 minutes left.
“I feel a bit for him (the Sicily Island coach) as they struggle to get the kids out for football. The only thing we’ve done in the past is play down our competition and I think we didn’t do that tonight,” he said. “Then Cedar Creek is a good 1A team from Ruston and it will be a good test for us. “It’s a solid team. They’ve made deep runs in the playoffs and they’ve got some good tough kids. They’re playing a good brand of football. This is going to be a team that we can’t take lightly. We’re going to have to have a good game plan to beat them.
Vidalia’s home opener kicks off at 7:00 a.m. Friday night at Dee Faircloth Stadium.
Norris said Mangham, Oak Grove and General Trass will be good tests in the district this year.
Delta Charter took care of business on the road at Plain Dealing winning 54-8 to open the season at 1-0. Ferriday fought hard in his season opener but lost 38-12 due to turnovers and penalties.
